The senior golden retriever turned 20 years old and marked the occasion by enjoying a pup-friendly carrot cake and by spending some family time with her pet parents and golden retriever siblings.
But the birthday wasn’t just a big event for August and her family; no, by turning 20 she also made world history!
August (or “Augie”) is now the oldest known living golden retriever.
A fair few goldens have made it to the ripe age of 17, or even to 18 and 19, but Augie is the first golden to make it to twenty.
Despite Augie’s advanced age, she’s still quite healthy.
Augie has been dealing with some kidney issues for several years, and she’s not quite as spry as when she was younger, but she’s still able to move around without struggling and she loves walking around the yard.
Augie’s long life has been eventful, and not always easy.
The lovable pup is a rescue dog, and she was actually rehomed twice before she found her forever family.
As stressful as it must have been, bouncing from family to family, it proved to be worth the struggle.
Because in the end, Augie ended up exactly where she needed to be; Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt gave Augie her forever home, and now she’s spent six blissful years living with them and their other lovely little furbabies.
Augie loves her family so much, and it seems like faith had always planned for her to find them.
Augie’s life is filled with so much joy thanks to Jennifer and Steve, and the last few years have been filled with love and excitement.
Not only has she been blessed with several furry siblings, but she’s enjoyed road trips around the country, countless snuggles, and many exciting games of fetch in the pool.
It’s often difficult for senior dogs to get adopted, and Augie is so happy that Jennifer and Steve saved her and completely transformed her life.
It’s no doubt their genuine love and care that has allowed Augie to thrive and prosper and to reach the record-breaking age of 20.
We’re so happy for Augie and wish her and her family many more wonderful years together.
